| USS Pampanito (SS-383) , a Balao -class submarine, was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for the gafftopsail pompano, Trachinotus rhodopus. She is now a National Historic Landmark, preserved as a memorial and museum ship in San Francisco at Pier 45. |
